My final research project ended up being a survey I
developed on surveymonkey.com. The survey wished to discover student's
awareness of the ceramics courses offered at American University. There were 74
responders of the survey. These students represented every grade, gender and
college of American University. The hypothesis of the study was, “Students
outside the College of Arts and Sciences are unaware of the ceramics courses
offered at American University.” This was rejected. There were students within
the college that were unaware of the course and there were many students
outside the college that new of the course. Much of the data was interesting
and has posed new questions for me to answer and/or ponder.
My final project reflects the differeing opinions of AU students on diversity within this campus population. I conducted intensive interviews of two white, two black, and two Asian students; all varying in gender and academic year. My hypothesis was that AU does not exemplify a diverse institution. The hypothesis was accepted as five out of the six students agreed that AU is not diverse. Though I was happy to see many people share the same feelings about the lack of diversity, there are some things that I would have changed about the study; specifically, the number of people I chose to interview. I feel as though if I had reached out to more students, within these three ethnicties, I would have gathered more qualitative data, and may have received a different answer to my hypothesis. Overall, I was happy to have been able to talk with other students on an issue that interests me.
